Two Sides of Orange County in Immigration Debate

Posted: Updated:

Northern Orange County is home to many immigrants and is in many ways very different the traditional Orange County.

Fox 11 talked to Alfonso Berumen, he's a farm worker and a US citizen.   But Berumen's oldest son was in the country illegally and was deported in an immigration raid.

Berumen told Fox 11 he feel awful and alone.  Berumen stayed in California with his youngest son, while his wife went back to Mexico with their older son.

Alfonso supports immigration reform, and hopes it will prevent other families from being separated.

"They grow up here, they only speak English, they know nothing about any other country and they risk deportation despite the fact that culturally and in every other way they're American," said Roy Garcia, another Fountain Valley resident.

Irvine is still very much like the Orange County of old.  The people who live there tend to be more conservative, especially on issues like immigration.

Francine Verbarg lives in Irvine, and she is completely against the Senate's immigration plan.  "I think it's not necessary I believe that if they enforced the laws that are already on the books – we wouldn't have a need for this," said Verbarg.

Other Orange County residents agree, saying the immigration debate is black and white.  "I really believe that people coming into this country need to come in legally," said Kathy Denham.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
