Police, race organizers outline Atlanta 10K safety

ATLANTA (AP) - Police say nearly every section of the Peachtree Road Race will be under the watch of surveillance cameras and officers from multiple agencies in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said Thursday that law enforcement and race organizers consulted with Boston Marathon officials and organizers of a Colorado race to incorporate their security suggestions into planning for the 10K on July 4.

Turner says every officer in the department will be on duty between July 3 and 5, and will work 12-hour shifts.

Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Tracey Russell says 60,000 runners will compete and 3,400 volunteers will work the event - which is up from last year.

Authorities and organizers are asking spectators to refrain from bringing backpacks and other large items
