BUFORD, Ga. -

Authorities say a park ranger is recovering after being shot overnight near Buford Dam.  According to investigators, a woman opened fire on the unarmed ranger, and then took her own life.

Investigators say the park ranger walked up to the woman's car to tell her the park was closed, and she needed to move on.  They say that's when she pulled a gun on the ranger.   She then shot herself, they say, but there was no confrontation between the two.

The ranger was hit in the torso.  He made his way to the road, where bystanders called 911 for help.  Not long after police arrived, they found the woman dead in her car.

The ranger was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery overnight.  His condition was not released.  Police say because he was not armed when he was hit, he had no way of defending himself.

The ranger's name has not been released.  Police say they're waiting to release the woman's name until they are able to notify next of kin.
