Arrest in Minneapolis cab driver robberies

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Minneapolis police made an arrest Wednesday morning in connection with a string of five cab driver robberies reported last week.

Tonio James Weaver, 22, was arrested at a home on the 5100 block of Knox Avenue North. Weaver is suspected of robbing five cab drivers at knifepoint over two days last week.

1800 block of East 26th Street
Victim was a Red and White cab driver

June 19th, 3:15 p.m.
2600 block of Cedar Avenue South
Driver was a Blue and White cab driver

June 19th, 4:30 p.m.
52nd Avenue North and Knox Avenue North
Victim was a New Star Taxi driver

June 20th, 4:30 a.m.
2400 block of 18th Avenue South
Victim was a driver for Yellow Taxi

June 20th, 7:15 a.m.
2000 block of East 28th Street
Victim was a Red and White cab driver

Weaver was charged Wednesday afternoon with one count of aggravated robbery related to the June 18 incident.

According to the criminal complaint, Weaver entered the Red and White cab at a Cub Foods store and had the driver take him to 1800 block of 26th Street East, where the robbery at occurred.

Weaver left with $45 in cash from the driver, who played a major role in the investigation. Prior to the robbery, he noticed Weaver handling a Gatorade bottle in the backseat. Fingerprints lifted from the bottle led police to Weaver.
