FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. -

The family of a motorcyclist killed in an accident protested a plea deal for the driver accused in the crash.

Retired U.S. Army Ranger Sid Agent died last September after an SUV struck him.

Authorities charged the SUV's driver, Jimmy Darrell Barnett Jr., with misdemeanor vehicular homicide and failure to yield.  Those charges together can carry a maximum of 24 months in jail.  However, Barnett quickly took responsibility and has a clean record, so attorneys reached a plea deal that included a $1,000 fine, 12 months' probation, suspension of license, community service at a Ranger camp and a donation towards Sid's daughter's college education.

"I have been living with this horror ever since the day of the accident," Barnett said.  "I cannot even begin to fathom how the family feels; I just wanted to say that I am extremely very sorry."

A group of Sid's friend's showed up at court on Tuesday to protest the plea.  His family says that they accept the legal process but feel it is too lenient.

"We have some mixed emotions, but we have to only follow what the law says, and the law, I think, needs to be changed," said Patricia Davis, Agent's sister. "I believe it was more severe than the punishment."

Agent's family and friends also hope this case will bring more attention to drivers about motorcycles and distracted driving.
