Wood from the Hood: Lost tree, lasting memories

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Sitting under what's left of their beloved 200-year-old red oak tree in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis, Cathy and Kevin Carmody are trying to find the silver lining in last weekend's vicious storms.

"We're going to be here for a while. We were hoping the tree would be here with us," Cathy Carmody said.

"It's one of the things that drew us to the neighborhood," Kevin Carmody said.

The Carmodys lost a huge branch off the enormous tree -- it destroyed their fence and the children's play area. Making matters worse, an expert has told them their beloved red oak has been compromised and now threatens the only home their family has known.

The tree must come down.

"My neighbor met me at the pass, just hugged me, I was in tears. We've been trying to save this tree, and we love the tree, and we're really sad that it's got to go," Cathy Carmody said.

That's where Wood from the Hood comes in. The Minneapolis company recycles urban wood. Rather than sending their red oak to a landfill, the Carmodys will ship it Rick Siewert.

"They get very attached to their trees. Yes they do. It's sentimental," Siewert said.

Siewert's staff will then transform the tree into something special, including a future table for Caribou Coffee.

The Carmodys had planned a small home expansion, so they want the wood sawed into lumber for a bar top, flooring, siding, and possibly some shelves for their new space.

"So the tree will live on right where it lived right here," Cathy Carmody said.

It's a way to make memories last of a lost tree from a destructive storm.

"Nineteen years sitting under this tree, now maybe we'll spend another 19 drinking beer and wine on the counter," Kevin Carmody said.
