Rivers on the Rise from Days of Rain

Posted: Updated:

It might be safe to say that all of us are sick of the rain, the clouds, and the active weather. Unfortunately, we still have a couple days to go before things finally calm down for more than 24 hours. What a week it's been though. Over the last few days we have seen several inches of rain, 2 rounds of high winds, and some of the worst power outages in state history. Now we may get to deal with the aftermath of all that rain… flooding. Flash flooding has already been a problem for some with rainfall rates upwards of 5 inches an hour.  Streets, creeks, and even backyards just can't handle that much water at one time. Well now, all of that water is finding its way into the lakes and rivers and levels are on the rise. Here are some of the rainfall totals the last 5 days across the region and across our neck of the woods.

After experiencing the rain, and seeing these images, it's probably no surprise that Minnesota has been the wettest state in the U.S. and more is to come with another widespread 1 to 2 inches of rain likely by Wednesday. Parts of southeast Minnesota could end up with another 4 or 5 inches as storms may once again "train" over the same areas.

This rain will lead to additional river flooding, but here are the current forecasts based on the rainfall that we have already received. Every major river in southern and central Minnesota is expected to be at or above flood stage by the weekend.
