Germany investigates Michael Karkoc, alleged commander of Nazi-led unit
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -
German prosecutors have opened a formal preliminary investigation into Michael Karkoc, the alleged commander of a Nazi-led unit during World War II who was found to be living in northeast Minneapolis since the war.
The German investigation will determine whether there is enough evidence to bring charges and seek extradition.
The Associated Press found Karkoc, 94, entered the U.S. in 1949 by lying to American authorities about his role in the Nazi SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion, which is accused of torching villages and killing civilians in Poland.
The Associated Press investigation found evidence indicating Karkoc was at the scene of the massacres, but records exists that directly link him to war crimes.
