The old car sitting in your driveway is gaining in value.  Want to sell it?  Leslie Vander Baan, Vice President of CarBuyCo joins Murray Feldman to explain why now is a great time to sell a used car.

She also provides the following information and tips to help you sell your used car.

  • American used cars have made significant improvements in holding their value in the past year: For Edmunds.com's 2013 Best Retained Value Awards, 12 of 23 segment winners were American cars vs. just 7 in 2012.
    • Overall brand (non-luxury): 2013—Jeep, 2012—Honda
    • Sedan (under $20k): 2013—Ford Focus, 2012—Honda Civic
    • SUV ($25-35k): 2013—Jeep Wrangler, 2012—Honda CRV

Consumer Tips:

  • Do your homework (really do your homework): There are a number of free options that consumers can use to accurately determine their vehicle's value, so they can approach the process with confidence.
    • Edmunds.com
    • Kelley Blue Book
    • CarBuyCo.com
  • Think about your car's curb appeal—Tips for "staging" your car for sale:
    • Clean out the trunk, under the hood, in the glovebox
    • Preparing a binder with your car's maintenance history
    • If you're selling online, take great photos (sunny day, good angle, etc.)
  • What to spend and what to skip before selling:
    • Bottom line: it depends on who you're selling to
    • Green light: Take care of the check engine light, new seat covers for a damaged interior, Remove stains, fix all lights (brakes, turn signals, etc.).
    • Yellow light: Depending on the buyer, it may be worth removing door dings, professional detailing, removing window tinting.
    • Red light: Don't spend on "personalization items"—they generally detract from the car's overall value rather than add to it. Don't try to cover up flaws—disclose them.
  • Know your buying audience: Dealers, individuals and online purchasers all have different priorities.
    • Individuals: Visual first-impression ("curb appeal"), your car's story (answering all of their questions)
    • Dealer/consignment buyer: Maintenance history, functionality
