Minnesota residents uncover lawns, cars, parties from storm rubble

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

If you have a tipped tree in your yard, good luck getting in touch with a tree removal service. FOX 9 called dozens of services in the Twin Cities and no one was picking up -- or they're backlogged and turning people away.

The men of Valdes lawn care are the hottest guys in St. Paul, and it isn't because they're working in sweltering heat.

Crews say their phones have been ringing off the hook, and turning people away who want downed trees removed from their yards.

A few miles over on Portland Avenue, there's a different cleanup scene, and it resembles a demolition derby.

It's cars versus trees, and the trees are winning. Powerful winds and a lightning strike toppled a massive ash tree and it landed on Vikram Parmalais's Toyota Prius.

In Minneapolis, Brett Rademacher says he was nearly impaled by this tree that came crashing through his windshield.

In Plymouth, crews cleared branches blocking traffic, and some roads looked like an obstacle course littered with downed street signs and other debris.

But one of the few bright spots today, Shalena Rudolph's high school graduation party went off without a hitch, even though the storm knocked out the power in her house.

A family member's generator and friends pitching in to clear the backyard debris helped save the day.
