CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A mural of a dead possum with a giant hole through its body in Pilsen has created quite a stir.

Some say the painting at 16th Street and Ashland Avenue resembles a rat, not a possum, and maintain that it's a negative image for the community. Other critics have called it disturbing, violent, senseless, and tasteless.

"… the fact that he had to make it with the center eaten out is like making a racist statement in a poor neighborhood," Keely Kh wrote on Facebook. "It's just wrong! It's bad enough people have to look at the abandoned buildings, the trash in the streets, the unkept and weed filled grounds. Now they need to pass by this ‘thing' some moron calls art? Not good taste at all!"

Though several in the community have expressed displeasure with the piece, a handful of people appreciate the work of the painter.

"I think the artist is very talented," Sammy Jo Beller writes on Facebook.

"Beautifully done," Ivan Beller adds. "And the perspective thing he's done here is brilliant."

Joseph Herman lends his interpretation: "Maybe he's actually showing what the mayor and the politicians are."

According to DNAinfo.com, a spokesperson for the alderman of the 25th district encompassing Pilsen admits that they've received complaints but also believes that art is in the eye of the beholder.

World-renowned Belgian street artist, ROA, is known for his paintings of skeletons and anatomical dissection, which are said to be reminders of the transience of life.
