Indicted DeKalb County CEO: 'I've done nothing wrong'

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis denied any wrongdoing after being indicted on 15 charges Tuesday.

DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James detailed the charges, which accuse Ellis of using his office to retaliate against businesses that didn't respond or contribute to his campaign contribution solicitations.

The indictment also alleges that county workers compiled lists of companies with county contracts during working hours. Ellis then allegedly used that list to solicit campaign contributions from those businesses.

After being released on $25,000 bond, Ellis talked to FOX 5's Justin Gray about the charges he's facing.

"My lawyers have asked me to tell you to direct all questions to them now that these charges have been filed, but I do want to make one statement emphatically to the good people of DeKalb County that I've done nothing wrong," Ellis said. "As I've said from the very beginning, I've done nothing wrong and I would never, ever, ever do anything to violate the public trust."

The director of purchasing and contraction in DeKalb County, Kelvin Walton, is named in several of the counts as an unindicted co-conspirator. Walton had no comment to FOX 5.

Back in January, authorities searched Ellis' home and his downtown office in Decatur. Officials confiscated computers and boxes of evidence as the CEO was appearing before a special grand jury involving the watershed management department and its contracts.

Following the search, Ellis announced that he was hiring a legal team in response to a grand jury investigation.

Gov. Nathan Deal's office said that the governor will put a three-person panel in place to determine if Ellis will stay in office as he battles the charges.
