Blackhawks losing money despite successful season

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Here's a really shocking fact about the Chicago Blackhawks: They're losing money.

Their games – during the regular season and during the playoffs - are getting record TV ratings and they're back in the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in four seasons. But they are not turning a profit.

Hawks owner Rocky Wirtz said will be at least two more years before that happens.

Crain's Chicago Business reports that the team spends $10-$20 million more a year than they take in. The balance is made up from other companies under the Wirtz corporation umbrella.

The Blackhawks ticket prices are still pretty low compared to some of other big teams in the league. The team also helps subsidize the league's 10 lowest earning franchises, as part of the NHL's new bargaining agreement.
