Plant Thieves Caught On Tape

Hide your azaleas. Hide your geraniums. Someone may be out to get your potted plants!

A couple's five finger discount was caught on tape. Their gain came at the expense of Wayne Aretz's green thumb.

"It's actually sad but funny; my friends and I got a kick out of it," said Aretz.

Aretz got a kick out of the surveillance video showing the couple walking by his Northern Liberties home admiring the Vinca Vine he'd recently planted.

Seconds later the man reaches over and plucks the plant out of the planter like they're at a store picking up produce.

The funniest part of it all, says Aretz, "obviously they were ready to shop, [they] had bags with them."

Pots knocked down on his street, plants pulled out and left on the ground, Aretz says he's seen that before.

But coming home from dinner Monday night to a horticultural whodunit like this, that's a first.

"I'm flattered in a way," said Aretz. "[They] passed up all the diff ones and they chose mine."

Though Aretz's home has apparently become a nursery, he's not planning to press any charges.

"Hopefully it will go to good use if I can bring a little of that into someone's life…I'm okay with that.

But he does have plans to refill the gaping hole in his mulch--with a plant that can better protect itself.

"Going to replant? Yeah! Sure! Thinking about a cactus."
