2 tornadoes confirmed around Chicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The severe weather outbreak that occurred on Wednesday June 12th will not go down in the record books, but was fairly significant, especially for the far western and southern counties including NW Indiana.

The Chicago metro was spared for the most part as a lake breeze developed in the late afternoon hours helping to cool and somewhat stabilize the atmosphere.

The National Weather Service out of Romeoville finished their storm survey Thursday afternoon at 2 locations and did confirm that 2 tornadoes did in fact touch down. Please keep in mind that the results are considered preliminary.

The first tornado touched down in southeastern DeKalb County near Shabbona at 4:42pm and lifted at 4:37pm and was rated an EF-1 with maximum winds of 95mph.

The second tornado touched down in Kankakee County near Manteno at 7:50 and lifted at 7:51 and was rated a strong EF-0 with maximum winds of 85mph.

According to the National Weather Service, there were 7 funnel clouds reported, 80 reports of hail, 20 reports of thunderstorm wind damage, and rainfall amounts ranging from .50" to over 3". Some of the rainfall rates in the strongest thunderstorms were 1-2" per hour.

A derecho was forecasted to form in Iowa and come through the Chicago area during the evening hours, but that did NOT happen. The derecho formed in central Indiana around 11:00pm and raced 600 miles at 47mph to the east coast and produced wind gusts up to 100mph in parts of Indiana and Ohio. A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms.
