DULUTH, Ga. -

A Duluth police officer says he's being harassed by his superiors because he's openly gay.

Duluth Police Officer Bobby Johnson says the gay slurs, sexual comments and harassment from commanding officers was constant. He said that he reached a point where it couldn't take it any longer.

"When you're saying things behind my back just so people will laugh at me, based on my sexuality, or if you're saying things to me to try to belittle me or berate me in front of other officers, it's wrong," Johnson said.

Johnson has been a Duluth police officer since 2005. Before that, he worked for another local police department. He filed a complaint in February with the city about the alleged discrimination and has been on paid administrative leave since.

On Monday, the Duluth City Council voted to approve a $20,000 settlement with Johnson over the discrimination allegation, but he rejected the deal. He said that he planned to retired as a Duluth police officer, but now that's not possible.

"If you can imagine doing something that you've always desired to do and in one split second it's taken from you based on the color of your skin or your sexual orientation," Johnson said.

Duluth's city attorney told FOX 5's Justin Gray, "We are aware of the complaint. The city disputes the allegation. We are in position to defend against it as we move forward."
