Bay Bridge Bonuses

Posted: Updated:

More than a dozen state lawmakers want answers.

Addressing a letter to the chairman of the Toll Bridge Program Oversight Committee, lawmakers requested detailed answers regarding bonuses tied to the Labor Day opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge's new east span.

Asm. Marc Levine (D-San Rafael) told Fox 11 investigative producer Heidi Cuda lawmakers want a specific breakdown of who's getting paid and how much.

"We should understand all the incentives and why those incentives were given," he said. "We need to understand that safety is the first concern. Without all the information, we won't know that."

Levine said they delivered the letter yesterday afternoon and are still waiting for an answer.

Asm. Brian Jones said bonuses should never have been considered.

"This is unbelievable that we're even thinking about bonuses for the builder for the state or for anybody regarding the Bay Bridge," he said. "The construction quality is not up to par, there's no way this can be done by Labor Day in a safe manner. There's no way we should be thinking about bonuses."

He says he's worried that the Bay Bridge project, which has been fraught with delays, cost overruns and safety issues, could be a foreshadowing of California's High-Speed Rail Project.

"The high-speed rail project is already having cost overruns," he said. "So we really need to be concerned."

Calls and emails to the Toll Bridge Oversight Committee chairman Steve Heminger were not returned.

Hell on earth, that's how some doctors describe Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa also known as E.B. It's a horrible genetic disease that Nicky Zahorcak was born with. A lot of his skin is raw, the slightest touch can cause blisters that quickly spread. He says, "Right now, all the bandages that you see everywhere even on my sides, they're all raw skin." His mother Silvia says very few people know about this rare condition and she wants to change that.
