High School sports a big business

Posted: Updated:

High school sports continues to generate big money in some communities. Minnetonka just completed a new paint job at Pagel Activity Center that included four large sponsor logos on the ice.

The decision to include the sponsor logos of Cub Foods, Maynards Restaurant, Lexus and Youngstedts was a joint decision between Minnetonka Schools and the Minnetonka Youth Hockey Association who both share the rink.

According to a district spokesperson, the decision to paint the four businesses on the ice was a thank-you for being long time sponsors and that it came as a surprise to the companies. There was no one-time lump sum payment for the added advertising inside the arena.

In some sponsor cases, businesses don't actually give directly to Minnetonka sports, but allow for fundraising opportunities. As an example, teams bag groceries at Cub where they can seek tips from customers as a fund raising venture. It was told that Maynards will turn over a slow night at the restaurant for a special community meal with a percentage of proceeds going to a sports program.
