Anoka County Commissioner Rhonda Sivarajah on Wednesday announced her candidacy for Minnesota's 6th congressional district.
Sivarajah is the first candidate to challenge Tom Emmer for the Republican Party endorsement in the race to replace Michele Bachmann.
Emmer said he wants to follow in Bachmann's footsteps by fighting "the ever-growing size of government."
A Star Tribune profile last year called Sivarajah "a darling of the local conservative blogs," with a fiscally-conservative track record on the Anoka County board. The crown jewel of her tenure was overseeing a 7.4 percent tax levy reduction in 2011 -- Anoka County's first decrease in at least three decades.
Judy Adams, an environmental activist from Circle Pines, Minn., announced Monday she will seek the Democratic endorsement for the 6th District. Adams was the first Democrat to jump into the race after Jim Graves dropped his candidacy, citing "mission accomplished" after Bachmann said she wouldn't seek another term.
