CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago Police recovered the body of a man from the Calumet River Tuesday afternoon on the South Side, fire officials said.

Two men went into the river about 2:45 p.m. near East 137th Street, just west of South Torrence Avenue, authorities said.

One of the men swam out of the river on his own, but the second man was unaccounted for when emergency crews arrived on the scene, Fire Media Affairs said Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased man has since been identified as 39-year-old Neil Karas, of the 13000 block of South Burley Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The U.S. Coast Guard, as well as Chicago Police and Fire departments searched for Karas. Police recovered his body near the 13700 block of South Hoxie Avenue, fire officials said about 8 p.m.

Karas' death is being investigated as a possible drowning. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
