EVANSTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man was attacked in an attempted robbery Tuesday morning after dropping his son off at school in north suburban Evanston.

The 54-year-old man was on his way home after dropping his son off at Evanston Township High School for finals when a man blocked the intersection of Davis Street and Darrow Avenue about 7:50 a.m., a statement from Evanston police said.

Once the victim stopped the vehicle, the suspect reached inside the driver's-side window, grabbed the steering wheel and gear shift, displayed a box cutter-type knife and demanded money, police said.

The victim was cut in the head, left arm and right hand before the suspect fled on foot without getting anything, police said.

The victim was taken in good condition to Evanston North Shore University Hospital.

The suspect is described as a black man, 35-40, about 5-foot-11 with a thin build, 35-40, police said. He was wearing jeans.

Police are reviewing surveillance cameras in the area and interviewing several witnesses.
