State Senator Ron Calderon Breaks Silence

Posted: Updated:

Six days after the F.B.I. raided his office, California state Senator Ron Calderon (D-Montebello) made his first public statement. Calderon is the focus of a corruption investigation, and for the last week, attorney Mark Geragos has been speaking for him.

Today in Sacramento, Calderon spoke briefly to a large gathering of media, before heading back to work on the Senate floor.

Although he didn't answer any questions--referring all media questions back to Geragos--he did say that the investigation has been stressful for him and his family, and he said he's looking forward to putting it behind him. Although the F.B.I. has been silent on the investigation's specifics, sources in the state capitol say it may be linked to his ties with a Southern California water agency.

U.S. Attorneys served a subpoena to State Senator Kevin De Leon, another Southern California lawmaker, to testify to the grand jury in July. A spokesmen for De Leon says the Senator is not a target of the investigation.

De Leon issues this statement: "I received a subpoena requesting information from the US Attorney's office in Los Angeles. I've communicated to the US Attorney's office my willingness to cooperate fully. The US Attorney's office has asked that the details of their inquiry remain confidential.  I intend to honor that request."

Fox 11 investigative producer Heidi Cuda has this report.

Hell on earth, that's how some doctors describe Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa also known as E.B. It's a horrible genetic disease that Nicky Zahorcak was born with. A lot of his skin is raw, the slightest touch can cause blisters that quickly spread. He says, "Right now, all the bandages that you see everywhere even on my sides, they're all raw skin." His mother Silvia says very few people know about this rare condition and she wants to change that.
