Judy Blume joins students in fight against Glen Ellyn book ban

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Hundreds of kids turned out to fight for the right to read "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." Their dedication paid off - the Glen Ellyn school board voted to reinstate the banned book Monday night.

The school board in Glen Ellyn District 41 banned "Perks" this spring, after a parent complained the content was too explicit. The book deals with molestation, partying, drugs, mental illness and homosexuality.

The book was removed because of what some called "disturbing" content, but students at Hadley Junior High disagree. They say it's educational and forces them to deal with life.

Now, they're getting help from one of the most famous authors in America: Judy Blume. The national author of "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret" says she's in agreement with the students and speaks out in a video they created on YouTube.

In April, the reconsideration committee recommended the book be put back on shelves and that it could only be read with a signed notes from parents.
