Bakery Refuses To Make A Cake For Same-Sex Couple

Posted: Updated:

A Colorado couple will not have a cake for their wedding, because the shop they want it from turned them away.

Why?  Well, the shop's owner says they have their sexual orientation to thank for that.

Now, this same-sex couple is fighting back, after exposing the bakery's policy in an experiment of their own.

Stephanie Schmalz and her partner, Jeanine, wanted to order a cake to celebrate their commitment ceremony.    They contacted the Masterpiece Cake Shop in Lakewood, Colorado, but the store refused to take their order.    The store has a strict policy against selling cakes for same-sex weddings.    Stephanie then tried a little experiment.    She called the bakery back,  pretending to be someone else, and asked for a cake for a dog wedding.  Without hesitation the owner agreed to make it.

Jeanine says she couldn't believe what had just happened.   "My goal is not to see somebody get out of business, but at the same time,  if you sell cakes, you sell cakes.  It shouldn't have anything to do with anything about me - where I live, what I do, what color skin I have, anything else."

This cake shop has made headlines before.  It turned down several other same-sex couples celebrating their unions.

Jack Phillips, the bakery's owner, says he has no problem with lesbian and gay customers or staff members, but he draws the line at gay marriage.  He says he rather shut down his bakery than compromise his beliefs.

The Colorado attorney general's office has filed a formal complaint against the bakery.

A judge will decide if what the bakery is doing is discrimination.
