ELLSWORTH, Wis. (KMSP) -

A Wednesday night boat accident on the St. Croix River killed one and injured two near the Kinnickinnic State Park.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department responded at 11:45 p.m. and said the boat was heading northbound and had hit a rock face north of the park on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix River.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department investigator Tom Gunderson confirmed that Patrick Puhalla, 46, of Bayport, Minn., was the owner of the boat and may have been driving at the time of the accident.

David Riley, 40, of Afton, was pronounced dead at the scene by Pierce County Medical Examiner John Worsing.

Puhalla and Daniel Schultz, 55, of Hudson, Wis., were brought to Regions Hospital. The severity of their injuries has not been determined.

The incident is still under investigation by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
