Great summer travel deals from AAA

Posted: Updated:

We know many of you are in the Summer Vacation Planning Mode. But, before you make a final decision on your final destination, AAA Senior Travel Manager Garrell Townsend has these great travel deals for you:

Travel Tips:

First and foremost purchase travel insurance. Travel insurance is not very expensive and can save travelers money and headache should their vacation plans get ruined for reasons out of their control. Travel insurance will reimburse travelers for refunds not covered by the travel provider as well sickness and injury abroad.

Air:
 - For cheapest flights and best availability, book between 1 and 5 a.m. Any ticket that was on hold or not paid in full is released at midnight. Meaning more supply, less demand (b/c people are sleeping), therefore travelers will find better deals.
 - Delete computer cookies. When shopping for tickets, delete your computer's cookies after you shop for airline tickets b/c if you go back to the same site later in the day, the site will remember and may reflect higher prices than if you went there for the first time.
 - The best days to fly are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Flights are the cheapest and airports are the least crowded.

Road:
 - First be sure to have car checked-out to ensure it's in good shape for a road trip. AAA members can get a free 24-point inspection of their at various auto shops throughout the Southeast
 - While we can't avoid high gas prices, we can try to make car more fuel efficient by removing unnecessary items that add weight to car, don't drive with less than a ¼ tank of gas, and make sure tires are properly inflated.
 - If using GPS, make sure to program it and know how to use it before getting on the road.

Cruise:
 - Be sure to participate in the cruise's safety drill after boarding the ship.
 - Register all international travel with the Department of State's STEP program for increased assistance if stranded in foreign country.
 - Take additional color copies of your passport and important documents, as well as leave copies with friends or family back home.
 - Travel with a small waterproof pack that is easily accessible should an incident occur. This should contain a passport, credit card, medicine, cash, etc.

Trends:

AAA has seen an increased interest in:
 - Riverboat Cruises
 - Specialty/Niche Travel
 - Bucket List Travel

New Attractions:

Universal Orlando:
 - New Despicable Me Minion Mayhem 3-D ride
 - New Transformer 3-D ride to open June 20

Islands of Adventure:
 - New Amazing Adventures of Spiderman high-def 3-D ride

Disney World:
 - New Fantasyland open with Belle's castle for dining and touring, The Little Mermaid ride, and more
