Are men being over-treated for low testosterone?

Posted: Updated:

A recent study published in the journal of the American Medical Association looked at health insurance claims for 10 million men between 2001 and 2011 to determine how many men were given a new prescription for testosterone.

The study found that the number of men being treated for low testosterone in 2011 was triple the number in 2001. In 2001, it was less than one in 100 men, whereas in 2011,  it is less than one in 34 men.

The study also found that 50 percent of the men being treated really did have evidence of hypogonadism, but FOX9 medical expert Dr. Archelle Georgiou says the study cited between 25 and 50 percent of the men being treated for low testosterone are being mismanaged over-treated.
