Zoning board OKs crematorium over residents' protests

Posted: Updated:
CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -

Residents packed a Cherokee County Commission meeting on Tuesday to voice opposition to a proposed crematorium in Canton.

Some people carried signs urging commissioners to vote against the crematorium, which would be located at the corner of Highway 20 and East Cherokee Drive. Residents said the site is too close to subdivisions, schools and businesses. They claim it will have a detrimental effect on their property values and their health.

"Mercury and toxic chemicals are emitted every time a body is burned. These chemicals go out of the stacks into the air and particles land on our playgrounds, our gardens," one woman said.

The operator proposing the crematorium, Bart Williams, said that it would be thousands of feet from those locations.

After hearing both sides, the zoning board sided with the crematorium. There will be a final vote in two weeks.

Neighbors were angry and disappointed. They had gone door-to-door earlier Tuesday and collected hundreds of signatures on a petition. They said that they'll be back again in two weeks and hope to change some minds before the final vote.
