Adairsville teen injured in dive

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. -

A 17-year-old Adairsville swimmer is recovering after being injured while diving into a swimming pool.

Kelly Miller, an avid swimmer who competes on his high school team, was swimming laps and dove into a friend's pool.

"We're so used to diving in shallow water because our pool at Adairsville High School is shallow, so I didn't think anything of it to dive in the shallow end," Miller said.

But Miller says he must have misjudged his dive and hit headfirst at the bottom.

"In the water -- I had my goggles on so I could see in the water -- and I noticed black spots, so I knew immediately to get out of the water," Miller said.

Miller then walked out of the pool with his head bloodied. He blacked out and had a seizure. His friend called 911.

At Floyd Medical Center, a neurosurgeon stabilized his fractured neck. His father said it was a terrifying ordeal, not knowing if his son would ever walk again.

"The first thing I did when I found out that I prayed immediately," the elder Kelly Miller said. "Freak accidents are going to happen. All we can do is pray to God that he carries us through it…Most of all I feel blessed that he was able to pull through and not have, you know, not be paralyzed."

Miller will need to wear a collar for at least the next three months. The doctor has also ordered him to take it easy this summer. He said that he vowed to his swimming coach that he'll be with the team in some capacity next year.
