DETROIT (WJBK) -

Firefighters rushed to a tire shop at Plymouth and Hartwell on Detroit's west side. A young man working with a welding torch touched off a toxic mess Thursday afternoon, not just a fire, but also a Hazmat scene.

"I had to evacuate the civilians around when we first pulled up because the smoke was coming out their way," said Chief Derrick Williams from the Detroit Fire Department. "Tires, all the different types of metals and the acetylene tanks and stuff like that inside."

Tanks that were exploding as they were trying to fight the fire.

The smoke, flames and fumes were too dangerous not just for neighbors, but even for the firefighters.

"I couldn't send my men in. I had to take care of my men here," Williams said. "I had to make sure the guys stayed away from the fumes and the toxic vapors."

Then, making matters worse, it started pouring rain.

"The guys can't see. They can't move. They're all wet. It was really rough," Williams said.

The fire fortunately did not spread.
