CHEVY CHASE, Md. -

A beloved employee of All Saints Church in Chevy Chase is the focus of an unexplained death investigation.

59-year-old Colbert "Colby" Pleze left the church at about 3 p.m. Thursday and headed for his car parked out front when he injured his leg which caused extensive bleeding.

The D.C. native and Marine who served in Vietnam died a short time later. He worked at the church for more than 10 years.

Police are confident a passing car did not hit him, but so far cannot explain how he received the fatal injury.

“People loved him here,” said Reverend Ed Kelaher. “There are children who grew up here knowing him as babies and knowing him right into their high school and college years, so he’s important. He is extremely loved and cared for.”

The reverend is among those who came to Pleze's aid on the steps of a church door.

“He cared about people,"  said Rev. Kelaher. "He sang every day. He had music in his heart. He was a lovely person."
