Mark Schauer announces run for Michigan governor

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

Get out the Mark Schauer for Governor bumper stickers.

After an arduous journey, the former Democratic Congressperson and senate minority leader has concluded he indeed does want to be governor and announced his intentions online Tuesday.

Now, he will take his fledgling campaign to Mackinac Island on Wednesday to make the announcement in person during the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce event within the shadow of the executive residence now occupied by the gentleman Mr. Schauer wants to remove from office, Gov. Rick Snyder.

All of this has been orchestrated by the new Democratic Party Chair Lon Johnson, who revealed to correspondents months ago that his objective was to avoid a costly and potentially bitter Democratic primary battle for the nomination.

And once Mr. Johnson landed on the Schauer candidacy, he methodically went about doing just that. One by one, they fell by the way side.

Former Democratic Congressman Bart Stupak: Out. Congressman Dan Kildee: Out. Mike Duggan: Never in but urged to get in. Mark Bernstein: Never in. Virg Benero: Out. Jocelyn Benson: Never in. Rep. Vicki Barnett was the last to go and so Mr. Schauer begins this uphill climb with nobody nipping at his heels for the nomination.

He'll save money as a result. He hopes to build a war chest that may not match that of millionaire Gov. Snyder, but he'll try to come as close as he can.

During his "I'm thinking about it" phase, Mr. Schauer talked with lots of folks. One reveals that one of the questions he asked was, "Can I win?"

The polls suggest that the GOP incumbent is vulnerable and some of the voters who picked him last time are having second thoughts about who the real Rick Snyder really is. It's an opening for the Democratic challenger but most believe he can not win by merely beating up on Mr. Snyder. Mr. Schauer's assignment is to explain why he is the better choice. That commences with today's electronic announcement and goes from there.

Not everyone in the Democratic Party is thrilled with his candidacy. One Detroit lawmaker confided the other day he was not overjoyed with the impending coronation of Mr. Schauer. So not only does the apparent nominee have work to do with independents and moderate GOP voters, there may be some fence mending to do in his own party.

And his close association with labor could be a challenge in the general election as well.

So get use to the phrase Schauer vs. Snyder. It's the story line for the next 19 months unless something unforeseen gets in the way of the Schauer nomination.

At this read, that appears highly unlikely.

A massive construction project is underway in Macomb County. If you travel on Van Dyke, you know how rough it is. Now, jackhammers are out there tearing up a two-and-a half mile stretch from 11 Mile to Chicago Rd. The road will be milled, then resurfaced with asphalt. New curbs will be installed. Nine intersections get new traffic signals. Sidewalks will be ramped to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Weather permitting, the project will be finished this summer.

Fiat and Chrysler announced plans this weekend to build three new Jeep models in China for that market, the biggest for the vehicles outside the United States, as they attempt to boost sales in a country where they lag behind their competitors. Ford Motor Co. on Sunday unveiled a new Escort sedan designed in China for global sale at a Beijing auto show that highlighted the growing influence of Chinese tastes on the industry. Automakers are looking to China's biggest auto show this year to help boost sales in this huge but cooling market. Total sales last year reached 17.9 million vehicles, but growth is expected to slow from 15.7 percent to as low as 8 percent, even as newcomers including Lincoln and Tesla enter the market.
