Cookouts mark unofficial start of summer

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Hundreds of people celebrated the unofficial start of summer at Grant Park on Monday.

The big question facing families at Grant Park was: grill or swim? Some people chose both.

"Take the kids out to the pool, and after we get finished, we're going to find a little area out there, make a couple sandwiches and call it day," said Kareem Daniel.

For Nathaniel Young and his wife, Memorial Day at Grant Park is a family tradition. They run a residential home for neglected children and their cookout is like a reunion.

"We have some that have aged out, but they still come back for mom and dad. They still call us that," Young said.

It was also the opening weekend for the Grant Park Pool. The Mitchell family was one of many who  spent a long winter, waiting for this day.

"We start talking about it, probably about a month too soon. And as soon as it opened, we were actually the first one to put our toe in the water,' said Nancy Mitchell.

The weather cooperated, with sunny skies and pleasant temperatures pleasing the crowds.
