Southern Arizona wildfire now in mop-up stage

NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) - Fire managers say a wildfire that has charred close to 11,000 acres of grass and brush on steep and rocky ridges of the Coronado National Forest in southern Arizona is now entering the mop-up stage.

The Soldier Basin fire is some five miles east of the Nogales airport in Santa Cruz County.

It's reported at 70% containment on Friday after firefighters burned off fuel around the perimeter and within the fire zone.

Forest Service officials say the fire is human-caused and isn't threatening any structures.

The fire began May 17.

It's being fought by about 200 firefighters plus three helicopters, 11 engines and seven water tenders, but managers say they're poised to release some crews.
