STAPLES Center Plus Verizon Equals Free Wi-Fi

Posted: Updated:

Ever watch a Lakers game, see an amazing play or monster dunk and wish you could see a few replays or pics? Is your cell service spotty or slow when there are several thousand of your closest friends also trying to use their phones to share photos or watch a video replay… heck, or just make a call? Well, Verizon just announced new service that may help you connect to everything else you want to check out while you're checking out that sporting event!

Getting right to it, "We are incredibly excited to launch our own Wi-Fi network designed and powered by our partners at Verizon and that we are able to provide our guests with a high quality connectivity Wi-Fi experience," Lee Zeidman, STAPLES Center, Nokia Theatre and L.A. LIVE Sr. Vice President and General Manager. "Additionally the reliability and access will encourage our fans to use popular social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare to share their experiences while at STAPLES Center and L.A. LIVE." So, there you have it! It's all for you, the fans… or is it? Well, yes and no. A portion of the move may be to reach people who aren't yet ticket buying fans. Why? Well, what better way to convert people who watch events at home by helping flood their social media streams with pictures of all the awesome fun they're missing out on while passively watching from the couch? Great service for the fans, but even better advertisement for all the friends of fans who haven't shelled out some of those greenbacks to partake of some Laker's madness or sit in the presence of royalty as the Kings take the ice.

Personally, I think it's a great thing that Verizon and Staples are doing because, if nothing else, it gives customers options. Cell service slow? Hit the wi-fi! Wi-Fi congested? Try out your LTE for uploading to Instagram or posting that Facebook status update. Just remember that when you're connected to the in-house wi-fi at Staples, Nokia Theatre or L.A. Live, stay off those banking websites or doing anything else you wouldn't necessarily want someone getting their hands on. Public wi-fi isn't the best place to be checking your balance or moving money from your savings account into your checking so you can buy that $200 throwback jersey. Just do yourself a favor, please. If you're on a date, use some common sense and spend more time focused on your date and your own meal than on the pictures of your friends' meals via whatever social network. Do that and you'll have a better picture to share later on, once you've had a successful and completely enjoyable date where both of you were actually present. #imjustsaying
