Outbreak of lice, scabies prompts isolation order at county jail

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An outbreak of lice and scabies at the Cook County Jail prompted sheriff's police to issue an isolation order for some inmates.

Ten inmates assigned to a dorm in Division II of the jail and five inmates housed in a mental health unit at Cermak Hospital have been diagnosed with lice and scabies, according to a statement from the Cook County Sheriff's office.

Sheriff Thomas J. Dart issued an isolation order Friday for Division II and a portion of the hospital, the sheriff's office said. The affected inmates have been isolated and are being treated. Other inmates in those areas are being given preventative treatment.

The isolation order will remain in effect until the infestation of the parasites is eliminated.

The treatment is especially challenging in the mental health unit because some inmates have refused treatment, the sheriff's office said. Those detainees are being restrained and treated.

The affected units are also being disinfected and the inmates provided with new linens and clothing, according to the sheriff's office. Linens from the affected area are being washed separately.

Staff assigned to the affected units are also being closely monitored.
