Cottage Grove teen's CPR saves dad during heart attack

COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Tim Galloway almost died.

At 45 years old, he thought it was just heartburn, but it turned out to be a heart attack. If not for his 14-year-old son, he wouldn't be here.

Jesse Galloway says his dad has always been a mentor and role model for him. But on Saturday the roles were reversed.

"Dads want to be the heroes of their sons or daughters," Galloway said. "My son is my hero to me."

It was Saturday afternoon. Tim wasn't feeling well. He went to lay down on the couch and suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

"His eyes rolled back so I started doing chest compressions," said Jesse, recalling the moment.

Then Jesse moved his dad onto the ground and got on top of him.

"I was scared. I wasn't pushing hard enough so every other one I would put my full body into it to make sure I was doing it hard enough."

By now you know Tim made it.

The father of four has three girls and Jesse, his only son. For the boys who are best friends, the bond began long before Saturday. That bond only strengthening after doctors told Tim without the five minutes of CPR Jesse did before paramedics arrived, he would be brain dead or not here at all.

"It's so emotional because I wouldn't be here without him," Galloway said.

Jesse said being called a hero is "totally awesome" but feels like there are far greater heroes in the world.

All this would have never been possible without Crossroads Church in Woodbury, Minn., where Jesse attends Hangtime, a youth ministry that meets every Wednesday.

A few months ago the ministry held a 30 minute CPR class for 200 middle schoolers. Jesse's family didn't even know until Saturday that the 14-year-old knew CPR.

"I believe that it was heaven-sent, just no two ways around it," Galloway said. "I'm just so proud of him and thankful for him literally a miracle in my life."

"It just makes me feel so happy that he's still here and I just don't know what I could do without him," Jesse said.
