High-Speed Rail: Turning the Tide

Posted: Updated:

The tide is turning on high speed rail. Longtime supporters are now publicly voting their conscience.

Both the mother and father of California's high speed rail project, the two key players who nurtured it from the beginning, have gone on the record against the current plan.  Both said it's no longer high speed rail.

I'd like to hear your Point of View. Send me an email at POV@fox11.com

We're talking about Quentin Kopp and Lynn Schenk.  Kopp is the founder of California's high speed rail authority and served as its chairman and Schenk is the current vice chair of the Rail Authority.  Both have been strong supporters of getting California a bullet train.

But both in recent weeks have voiced their disappointment about the so-called blended plan, which funnels two billion dollars into transit projects in northern and southern California that are not high speed rail.

Kopp told Fox 11 it's a betrayal of the voters, which he takes personally because he pushed hard to get Prop 1-A passed in 2008. And he specifically ensured the bullet train law had safeguards to protect taxpayers and that a true bullet train would be built.

His declaration is a driving force behind a lawsuit against the blended plan that could deal the rail authority a lethal blow.

And another P.R. nightmare for the Rail Authority occurred when Vice Chair Lynn Schenk shocked board members at a recent hearing by refusing to vote on a key memo to implement the blended plan.

This should be a big wake up call for the High Speed Rail Authority and Governor Brown.

This plan is not high speed rail. This plan needs to be shelved and the rail authority needs to go back to the drawing board and come up with genuine high speed rail.

High Speed Rail is what the voters of California approved and that is what the voters should get.

Thanks for listening.
