Donations pour in to help family of unborn baby with fatal defect

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -

As a Fayetteville couple prepares to say goodbye to their unborn child, FOX 5 viewers are reaching out in a very special way to help.

Doctors have told Lauren and Nick Bishop that their unborn baby Ethan has a neural tube defect called anencephaly and won't survive.

After FOX 5 reported on their story on Tuesday, the Bishops said that they heard from numerous viewers wanting to help.

"I can't even explain it. Our hearts have burst. I think -- I know I cried myself to sleep. Nick and I shed many, many tears yesterday," said Lauren Bishop.

Bishop and her firefighter husband Nick, who works two jobs, were trying to raise $6,000 to take care of medical expenses and burial arrangements.

After the story ran, FOX 5 viewers donated $1,100 to "The Hope for Ethan Bishop Fund." Several viewers emailed FOX 5 to donate burial plots, and other funeral related items.

"My friend in Michigan, Sarah, really convinced me to do this and I really had to shallow my pride on it because I don't like asking for help," said Lauren Bishop.

Help came in a huge blessing from Tony House and Mike Plott of Holly Hill Funeral Home in Fairburn.

"We are going to have a traditional funeral and we are going to bury the baby," said Tony House.

Thanks to the Holly Hill Funeral Home donation, baby Ethan's service will be held in the chapel. The funeral home will donate transportation, programs and anything else the family needs related to the funeral.

Lauren Bishop said she was grateful.

"I am so unworthy for the love and the blessings....it's unbelievable," said Lauren Bishop.

Doctors have scheduled a C-section delivery for baby Ethan on June 19.
