Couple's unborn baby has terminal defect

Posted: Updated:

A Fayetteville couple is preparing to bury their baby before the child is born.

Lauren Bishop, a 31-year-old pregnant mother of two, and her husband Nick are dealing with an unimaginable reality. Doctors have told the Bishops their unborn son, Ethan, has a rare neural tube defect and will not make it.

"You immediately start praying, 'Let it be Down's [Syndrome]...let it be something that's survivable," said Bishop. "His anencephaly is quite severe. There is no skull or brain above where the eyebrow would be."

Lauren's husband, Nick, is a firefighter.

"I have been doing this job for 7 years. I run a lot of pediatric calls. I've run a lot of pediatric emergencies and not once have I heard of this condition," said Nick Bishop.

Lauren says anencephaly occurs in one out of 10,000 pregnancies. It basically means little Ethan has no brain and cannot survive outside of the womb.

The couple turned to their faith to get through the difficult diagnosis, but they say breaking the news to their son Leo was extremely tough.

"Sitting down with our 8-year-old and telling him, who prayed repeatedly for a brother that, he probably will not be able to come home with us. He is devastated," said Lauren Bishop.

Instead of celebrating a birth, the Bishops are planning a funeral for baby Ethan.

The couple has no life insurance on their unborn child.  Nick is working two firefighter jobs to make ends meet, but money is still needed for funeral, burial and medical expenses. So, Lauren started a Facebook page in order to raise $6,000 to bury Ethan.

"It's been a tremendous amount that we were blindsided with, but you have to bury your child. And you never think at 31 you will be picking out your child's cemetery plot," said Lauren Bishop.

"I think in the womb he is going to do more good for mankind than what most people ever do that live to be 100 years old," said Nick Bishop.
