Tardy to the Party: Blackberry BBM To Launch On iOS & Android

Posted: Updated:

Blackberry announced at their Blackberry Live event Tuesday morning that their once popular Blackberry Messenger service will be available for the first time to iOS and Android users this summer with the disclaimer that the move is, of course, "subject to approval by Google Play and the Apple App Store." BBM at one time was so loved it actually kept many holding on to their aging devices despite their frustrations at the lack of apps and other functionality, but I think the only way to really make this move successful is to jump into a time machine and do it about four years ago. Many people who were fresh converts to other platforms, having come from Blackberrys, would have most certainly stuck with the app had it been available then but I have a hard time believing now that the app will see a lot of action now.

According to Blackberry's blog, version one of the multi-platform BBM will bring the following features to users on iOS and Android:

  • Multi-person chats
  • Voice note sharing
  • Blackberry Groups, where BBM users are able to set up groups of up to 30 people and share calendar, photos, files and more

The company has also said that, in addition to a new feature called BBM Channels, iOS and Android users should have voice and video chatting "later this year" which is again, "subject to approval by the Apple App Store and Google Play." To put this into perspective, while Blackberry didn't get the message and release the app to a multi-platform audience sooner, there is a huge audience outside the US for these devices in emerging markets and for them BBM may be right on time. Only time will tell! What do you think? Will you be downloading and using the app once it comes to the device you're rocking right now? Let me know in the comments below.

It's no secret that Microsoft has struggled in the hardware department so I can't say whether the Surface Pro 3 will be the hero Microsoft needs but I can say it is the modern computing experience users deserve. I love it and think you should too! Read on to find out why.
