There is one residential detox center across the street
from Bertran Elementary in Reseda. Two others are right around the corner, and
two more are being built nearby.
"It's crazy" says resident Shannon Hill,
echoing residents who say the entire neighborhood is becoming a "drug
"We are applying with state law"says an
unapologetic owner Tom Whiting, adding he is trying to "help people, and
that there is no law prohibiting the facilities near schools."
But there is city zoning, says Councilmember Dennis Zine,
claiming that Whiting is bypassing the city, by getting state permits -saying
each facility has only six beds. The residents and Zine believe it's more....
The city attorney is getting involved, and Zine is trying
to get jurisdiction from California officials,
for something that, may, indeed, be state licensed,, but really involves
neighborhood quality of life.
The residents are getting their own lawyer..."one
detox would be fine, perhaps two...but five? He is using the law to make money
and destroy our neighborhood".
