A suspect is in custody after a bomb scare at Westland City Hall. We're told a man held a worker hostage as SWAT teams surrounded a building on Ford Road. Nobody was hurt.

We're told the man was demanding to see the mayor, and when the mayor wasn't available he said he had a bomb.  It is not clear what exactly what the man wanted. The police chief hinted that a lot of things he was saying did not appear to be very rational.

The suspect surrendered to heavily armed officers in camouflage. The peaceful ending came after a dramatic afternoon with Ford Road blocked off and the area around city hall swarming with police, snipers and members of the Bomb Squad.

We're told the suspect is 40 years old and may have lived in Westland at one point, but it is not clear if he lives there now.  Police made him strip to be sure there was no danger.

As a precaution, nearby schools were locked down with students and buses kept at least a half mile from the scene.

The tense situation followed an emotional morning. Hundreds gathered for the funeral of Wayne-Westland firefighter Brian Woehlke, who died last week fighting a fire. Emergency personnel from as far away as Canada came to pay respects.

The police chief said the worker who was held hostage escaped out of a back door.

The chief also said it does not appear that there were ever any explosives. The Bomb Squad has gone through the building and also the cars in the parking lot. We're told the area is safe.

The mayor said they have seen the man come into the office before demanding to speak with him.
