BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (KMSP) -

A 65-year-old Bloomington man is recovering after he was swallowed by a sinkhole while walking with his wife and their dogs on Sunday morning.

The couple was walking near 102nd Street and Scarborough Road when the ground gave way and he dropped into the sinkhole. Bloomington police say the sinkhole was near a manhole and that the ground around it may have been compromised.

The man was transported to Fairview Southdale Hospital to be treated for bruises to his face and chest.

Crews are currently investigating, but officials say there are no signs of cracks or bad fittings on a large pipe nearby that may have leaked water and weakened the soil.

Bloomington officials say crews will return on Monday to continue to assess the scene, but they stress that the area is safe.
