2 dogs killed in Northfield home invasion

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (KMSP) -

Police in Northfield, Minn., are investigating after a resident came home for lunch and found someone had invaded his home and killed his dogs.

Police say the break-in occurred sometime between 9 a.m. and noon on the 700 block of College Street.

The homeowner told investigators he found the back door open and his two Schnauzers killed. Fearing that the intruder may still be inside, the man left and immediately called police.

Responding officers found no one inside, but said one of the dogs died of a stab wound and the second was killed by apparent head trauma, possibly a kick.

Detectives continue to investigate, and they say it appears another home in the area had also been broken into. Officials say quarters were taken and chests in the bedroom had been rummaged through.
