Wrigley changes its mind on caffeinated gum, at least for now

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Wrigley is already taking its brand new caffeinated gun off the market to give the FDA a chance to take a closer look at how risky minty, chewy pieces of caffeine can be.

One piece of Wrigley's Alert Energy chewing gum contains 40 milligrams of caffeine.  That is a little more than you would find in a can of Coke.

"If a kid was to eat some of this gum and have an energy drink or even pop, the level of caffeine that they're getting in that given day is significantly high," said St. John Pediatrician Marcus DeGraw.

Caffeine is a stimulate and can affect everything from blood pressure to sleep quality and beyond.

"Definitely has significant side effects, especially on the age brackets of kids whose brains are still developing.  So that's the concern, especially towards kids," DeGraw said.

Wrigley is only the latest company to introduce caffeinated chewing gum.  A number are already on the market.  The FDA has not considered caffeine in food and drinks since it was added to soda back in the 1950s.  So now the agency has a big job to look at the affect on kids because they have easy access to all of it.
