Senate passes internet sales tax bill

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Many people consider the lack of a sales tax a good reason to shop online, but on Monday, the senate approved a plan to close the loophole.

Under current law, states can only require online stores to collect sales taxes if they have a physical building in the state. So, stores like Target and Wal-Mart collect sales taxes online, but websites like Amazon don't.

The bill now moves on to the house, where it faces a tougher sell.
