South Jersey Families Feeling Violated By Grave Vandals

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. -

Charles Dixon and his wife Joyce are still  mourning their youngest

daughter Rose's death.

"You just cant let go of her," sighed her father.

The solace of the family's weekly trips  to Mount Holly cemetery are often interrupted

by a sense of violation.

"When you  pull up and you see something missing that goes like
a piece of your heart," said Rose's mom Joyce.

The young mother of two died suddenly at age 33  from a blood clot in 2009.

The Dixons say since she's been buried in the South Jersey cemetery vandals have desecrated her grave--stealing about 600-dollars in solar lights and landscaping.

"It's bad. It breaks your heart," said Rose's father Charles.

The Dixon's showed us pictures of the seasonal themes they use to landscape Rose's grave.

But they say none of the decorations stick around for long.

"This is a whole set up they took--pulled that completely out," Joyce said pointing to a handful

of pictures.

That's when the Dixons started cementing things down.

A caretaker says they even  put a camera in a  tree to catch the crook--it too fell prey.

"It didn't catch no one, " said Charles Dixon. "It was put in another tree and they stole it."

Years ago the mausoleum doors were also  stolen from the cemetery.

Police chief Steve Martin says like Mount Holly, other cemeteries have been targeted in the past.

But the Dixon's  theft is the first reported  in years.

"It's  sad, disrespectful and sad," said Vicki Loveland whose father-in-law's military medallion

and other ornaments have been stolen from Mount Holly cemetery.

She and the Dixons say it's a disgrace to their loved ones trying to rest in peace.

Nancy Jones, the president of the Mount Holly Cemetery Board, says there's not much they can do.

She says a camera put up to catch the crooks was stolen. Noting that even her family's plot

was targeted.

The police chief says he plans to increase patrols in the area.
