Body of Wicker Park man found at Loop CTA station

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The body of a Wicker Park neighborhood man was found on the tracks at a Loop station Friday morning.

The body -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as 55-year-old Elmer Williams -- was found about 9:40 a.m. at the CTA station at 117 W. Lake St., police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

Power was originally removed between the Damen and Racine stations following a report of a person on the right-of-way, CTA spokeswoman Lambrini Lukidis said.

Chicago Fire Department personnel removed the body, according to Fire Media Affairs. Williams, of the 1600 block of West Le Moyne Street, was dead on the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.

The body was found underneath a grate adjacent to the tracks, Mirabelli said. The death apparently did not involve contact with a train, and authorities said Williams may have been electrocuted after making contact with the third rail.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, according to the medical examiner's office.

While emergency personnel were working, Blue Line trains were operating only between O'Hare and Damen; and Racine and Forest Park.

Train service was initially restored about 10:20 a.m., but power was cut once again about noon because investigators returned to the scene, Lukidis said.
