Racist Graffiti Found In Ransacked Home

PHILADELPHIA -

A construction worker found the vandalism this morning, and that wasn't the only discovery.

FOX 29's Dave Kinchen has the report from Fishtown that you'll see only on FOX.

While it is our policy not to show images of hate on our air, we still want to warn you, some of the details of this story may be offensive to some viewers.

The incident occurred on the 400 block of Moyer Street.

"I just kind of thought that we were past the racial issues in this country," said contractor Kenyatta Johnson, who found walls full of racial slurs in the Fishtown house under renovation when he came to work Friday.

The N-word is almost everywhere, along with variations of offensive four-letter words.

As you can imagine, Johnson is floored.

"I was a bit taken aback that that would happen," Johnson said. "And the neighbors, you know, when they found out what happened, they themselves were taken aback at what had happened. They were like, we can't believe this is going on."

What's more, he says equipment was also stolen.

"There were no tools, so we lost ... about $45,000 to 50,000 worth of tools," Johnson said.

Some in the neighborhood think it may have been done to intimidate an African-American family moving in.

Neighbors are also shocked.

"It seems the neighborhood has gotten a lot better, but that kind of element is still creeps in every once in a while," Neighbor Lucas Glass said. "It's very disappointing."

Police are investigating, and Johnson says it's not getting him down.

"It hurts my feelings, but it doesn't hurt me," he said. "I more feel sorry for the individual who did this because, you know, 90 percent of Americans are past that."
